esidents in Bener Meriah, Aceh, have rebuilt a key access bridge using their own funds after last year’s devastating floods, citing delays in government reconstruction efforts.
On Thursday, hundreds of residents gathered at the Enang-Enang Bridge in Pintu Rime Gayo district for its official reopening.
Many attendees were emotional, with some in tears as they marked the restoration of access after the bridge had been closed for more than seven months.
Sahrial Abadi, a local resident who initiated the crowdfunding effort and oversaw the reconstruction, was also visibly emotional during the event.
"The road is officially reopened today. The asphalt paving and bridge repairs have been completed. Thank you to everyone who contributed," he said during the reopening ceremony as quoted by Kompas.com.
He said the repair of the Enang-Enang road and bridge was not only about restoring access, but also a symbol of renewed unity and mutual cooperation in the community.
Sahrial said the community raised more than Rp 1 billion (US$ 55,500) to rebuild the Enang-Enang Bridge. About half of the funds have been used to reconstruct the bridge and repair surrounding roads, while the remainder will be allocated to building a retaining wall, a place of worship, and other facilities.
