he Medan District Court sentenced a man to two years behind bars for his involvement in protected wildlife animal trading by selling 13 kilograms of pangolin scales.
The verdict against the 43-year-old Obet Tarigan is more lenient than the two-and-a-half-year sentence demanded by prosecutors.
“Defendant Obet Tarigan has been sentenced to a prison term of two years,” presiding judge Lenny Megawaty Napitupulu said in her verdict during a trial session on June 10.
She agreed with prosecutors’ charges that Obet was legally and convincingly proven to be guilty in a crime of selling or trading without authorizing the specimen, body parts or goods made of body parts of protected animals.
The defendant was found guilty of violating Article 40A (1) letters f and h juncto Article 21 (2) letters c and g of Law No. 32/2024 on Conservation of Natural Recourses and Ecosystem.
In its considerations, the panel of judges said the incriminating factor was the action against efforts to conserve protected wildlife. Meanwhile, mitigating factors include the defendant being courteous during the trial, admitting his mistake, being remorseful and pleading for leniency.
