Yenny, daughter of late president and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) leader Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid, led a delegation of Kowani activists for the luncheon meeting with Al-Amudi at his residence in Central Jakarta on Tuesday.
Yenny thanked the ambassador for his invitation, describing their courtesy meeting as the beginning of a partnership focusing on women's empowerment, education, entrepreneurship, social initiatives and exchanges between women's organizations in the two countries.
“We hope this meeting marks the beginning of an even stronger partnership between the women's movements of Indonesia and Saudi Arabia," she said, as quoted from a press release from Kowani.
She said she appreciated Saudi’s efforts to strengthen the role of women in society and that Kowani “looks forward to building collaboration between Indonesian and Saudi women that will further enhance people-to-people diplomacy and generate tangible benefits for both nations”.
Founded in 1928, Kowani serves as an umbrella organization for over 100 women's groups across Indonesia, down to the regency and city levels. It has also held a special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc) since 1998.
