resident Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have signed a series of landmark agreements on missile systems and critical minerals, as both leaders seek to bolster strategic ties amid rising geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific.
The signing took place during Modi’s two-day state visit to Indonesia, the first stop of his tour to three nations including Australia and New Zealand. The trip, according to Modi, aims at advancing India’s Act East policy and Global South-oriented Mahasagar vision, as well as strengthening its commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
Modi arrived in Jakarta on Monday afternoon. Upon entering Indonesia’s airspace, his plane was escorted by five Air Force fighter jets. The prime minister was later welcomed personally by Prabowo and four cabinet members at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta.
On Tuesday, the two leaders held bilateral talks at the Presidential Palace complex in Central Jakarta. They concluded at least 15 strategic agreements and memorandums of understanding covering defense, critical minerals, space, health, agriculture, telecommunications, medicines and maritime security.
One of the agreements include a contract between the Defense Ministry and India-Russia joint venture missile manufacturer BrahMos Aerospace for the company’s supersonic cruise missiles. Another deal was a cooperation pact between Bharat Dynamics Ltd. and Indonesian defense company Republikorp on air-to-air missiles.
Speaking after their bilateral talks, Modi described the relationship between the two countries as entering a “new golden chapter”, saying the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018 has taken a new flight and expanded in various sectors.
“A golden era beckons both our nations,” Modi said. “The positive impact of this new chapter will be felt not only by our two nations, but across the world throughout the 21st century, benefiting all of humanity.”
