he United States has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening ties with Indonesia and Southeast Asia, with senior diplomats highlighting expanded cooperation in trade, investment and security as the US marks 250 years of independence.
Speaking to reporters at a Fourth of July reception in Jakarta on Thursday, US Chargé d’Affaires ad interim to Indonesia Peter M. Haymond described Indonesia as an indispensable partner and Southeast Asia’s largest economy, underscoring its importance to Washington’s engagement in the region.
Haymond pointed to opportunities for closer cooperation in emerging industries, particularly critical minerals that are increasingly vital to global supply chains and future technologies. He also expressed optimism about expanding trade and investment, citing Jakarta’s efforts to improve the business climate and attract foreign capital.
“Our bilateral trade reached around US$45 billion last year, but it should be even larger. We appreciate the Indonesian government’s efforts to create a more conducive business climate that can further enhance trade and investment opportunities,” he said.
On security, Haymond said Washington remained committed to working with Indonesia on both traditional and emerging challenges, ranging from maritime security and border protection to online fraud, illegal gambling networks and the misuse of artificial intelligence.

Maintaining strong ties with ASEAN also remains a key US priority, said newly appointed US ambassador to ASEAN Kevin Kim, adding that Washington sees the region as where “the future of the 21st century will be written.”
