P

resident Prabowo Subianto and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan agreed to strengthen coordination on efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East during talks at Hambalang on Wednesday, while the Indonesian leader also thanked Ankara for helping repatriate nine Indonesian activists detained by Israel.

The Turkish diplomat arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday evening, welcomed by Foreign Minister Sugiono. Fidan then arrived in Hambalang on Wednesday for a meeting with Prabowo.

“During his meeting with Foreign Minister Fidan, President Prabowo conveyed his deepest appreciation to H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Government of Turkey for its invaluable support in facilitating the repatriation of the nine Indonesian nationals who were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0 humanitarian mission,” Sugiono said on his X account on Wednesday.

The nine Indonesian activists were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla of around 50 boats that set off from the European cities of Marseille, Naples and Barcelona in April, trying to deliver aid to Gaza. Some 22 boats were intercepted by Israeli authorities off the coast of the island of Crete in late April. The boats then regrouped in Turkey before departing on May 14 from the Turkish city of Marmaris.

On May 18, Israel boarded the flotilla vessels, removing the participants and transporting them to Ashdod port, where they were detained. On May 21, the activists were deported to Istanbul.

On May 24, nine Indonesian nationals returned to Indonesia via Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten.

Sugiono said that in Hambalang, the two sides discussed the situation in the Middle East, particularly in Iran and Palestine.
