P

resident Prabowo Subainto departed for Paris on Monday evening for talks with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, officials said, marking the second meeting between the two leaders in less than two months.

Speaking to reporters in Jakarta on Tuesday, Second Deputy State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro said Prabowo would celebrate the Idul Adha Islamic holiday in France during the working visit, though he did not elaborate further on the President’s agenda.

“The President left last night for his overseas work visit. [...] Foreign Minister [Sugiono] will provide further details,” Juri said.

Prabowo’s trip comes just over a month after his previous visit to Paris for talks with Macron, during which the two leaders discussed a broad range of cooperation, particularly in the defense sector.

Indonesia in recent years has strengthened ties with France as part of its military modernization drive, pursuing several French defense systems, including Dassault Rafale fighter jets, Scorpène-class submarines, missiles, radar and other military equipment.

During their previous meeting, the two sides also discussed expanding cooperation in military education, with Sugiono saying at the time that Jakarta was seeking a partnership with France “beyond procurement”.
