oreign Minister Sugiono on Tuesday met with his Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan in Jakarta and discussed energy, investments and regional cooperation as a commodity crunch driven by the protracted Middle East conflict weighs on Southeast Asia.

Ahead of an annual leaders’ retreat between President Prabowo Subianto and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong set to be held in Indonesia later this year, the ministers said their talks focused on strengthening the architecture of bilateral and regional cooperation and advancing sustainable industrial development amid an increasingly turbulent geopolitical landscape.

Speaking in a joint statement, Sugiono said Jakarta and Singapore were looking to advance existing cross-border electricity trade and energy investments, adding that both countries would build on earlier green economy projects and deepen supply-chain integration.

“On energy, we talked about cross-border electricity trade and development and investment in energy that we are hoping to be the largest electricity project, especially the sustainable electricity project,” Sugiono said, without providing further details on the project.

Balakrishnan echoed Sugiono’s optimism in further expanding their bilateral energy cooperation, saying that Singapore viewed Jakarta as a high-potential partner in the green economy.

“Indonesia has vast potential in the energy space, [including] solar, geothermal and hydroelectric,” Singapore’s top diplomat said.

“In fact, I see Indonesia as a superpower in energy. It’s a matter of getting the investments to flow and getting these projects to fruition. […] Indonesia’s plentiful energy potential will also complement Singapore’s role as a regional hub for technology and for infrastructure financing,” he added.
