traditional pompong wooden boat had an accident in Siak regency, Riau, while transporting workers for a draft survey in the early hours of July 7, resulting in three fatalities and one missing person.
The pompong boat, KM Gading 2, had the accident at about 12:30 a.m. in the Tanjung Buton Industrial Park (KITB) port area in Sungai Rawa village, Sungai Apit district, when it was sending crew to survey MV Hirmala’s draft, a maritime method of calculating a vessel's weight by markers along the hull indicating water displacement levels.
Jeny, a representative of Tujuh Samudra shipping company, reported the accident to the Pekanbaru Search and Rescue (SAR) Office, which immediately deployed 10 SAR workers to the accident scene, located some 103 kilometers away from the office.
The SAR team decided to focus its efforts around the last known position using a combing method, both on the surface and in the water with divers.
“When the accident happened, three passengers from the pompong boat were safe, one dead and three others missing,” Pekanbaru SAR Office spokesman Kukuh Widodo said on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, SAR workers managed to find two victims who were previously declared missing.
