fficers from Bali Police’s Water and Air Police (Polairud) Directorate have thwarted an attempt to smuggle and trade protected green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the coastal area of Buleleng regency, in northern Bali.
“We thwarted an attempt to smuggle 21 green sea turtles on Pegametan beach in Sumberkima village, Gerokgak district, Buleleng, on Friday,” Polairud Directorate’s Law Enforcement Sub-directorat chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Nanang Pri Hasmoko said in a statement on Monday.
He said that police nabbed one suspect and chased two other suspects.
“Our further investigation uncovered the involvement of two other suspects in the smuggling attempt,” he said.
Nanang said that the smuggling attempt was uncovered after the police received a tip off from the Pegametan coastal community that there was alleged to have been illegal trade of green sea turtles.
Following up the information, police officers conducted investigations for several days.
