apuan rebels have claimed they would facilitate access for humanitarian organizations under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to assist Papuans who are affected by conflict and in evacuation centers.
The West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), the armed wing of the Free Papua Organization (OPM), has requested the government to thus allow access for the evacuees affected by the conflict.
TPNPB-OPM spokesman Sebby Sambom said that the rebel forces were open to humanitarian efforts in Papua.
“If the Indonesian government allows access for independent humanitarian assistance, then TPNPB is ready to provide access guarantee for humanitarian organizations who are neutral, independent and impartial,” he said in a written statement on Sunday, as quoted by tempo.co.
He said that the rebels would only open humanitarian access to organizations under the supervision of ICRC to assist residents affected by conflicts and in evacuation centers.
The rebels also said that evacuation centers should receive attention and monitoring from the international community and called for the opening of humanitarian access that is safe, independent and without restrictions as part of the state’s responsibility to protect civilians affected by the conflicts.
“Therefore, TPNPB requested the Indonesian government to immediately allow open humanitarian access to Papua Land to help the residents who have to evacuate because of decades-long conflicts,” Sebby said.
