emarang city has hundreds of waste banks managing more than 1,700 tonnes of waste per year with a value of about Rp 1.99 billion (US$110,304) and aims for more waste banks as cities rush to manage their waste problems.
“As of 2025, there were 857 waste banks with 15,725 customers in Semarang,” Semarang Mayor Agustina Wilujeng said on Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.
“The banks managed 1,707.7 tonnes per year with a circular economy value of Rp 1.99 billion.”
Agustina said the city administration aims to increase the number of waste banks to 1,486 with a projection of managed waste reaching 2,823.4 tonnes per year.
She said she would like to drive behavioral change in waste management from its source through the Semarang Wegah Nyampah (Semarang Doesn’t Want to Litter) program, strengthening waste banks, developing the circular economy and public education.
The mayor pointed out that the Bulusan subdistrict is a success story in waste management, which also opened economic opportunities.
The program in Bulusan managed to strengthen residents’ cooperation and develop sustainable living culture. Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat directly expressed his appreciation for the subdistrict during a visit on Tuesday.
