he Transportation Ministry has approved the extension of the Trans Batam bus service to include Hang Nadim International Airport in Batam, Riau Islands, starting on Monday, as the integration of the two transportation modes will significantly cut travelers’ costs.
The approval was given in conjunction with the launch of 19 new Trans Batam buses at Engku Putri Field in Batam Center on May 26.
The buses were officially launched by the ministry’s land transportation director general Aan Suhanan, who was previously chief of the National Police’s Traffic Police Corps (Korlantas).
Aan applauded Batam city administration for strengthening public transportation amid fluctuating economic dynamics.
“Developing mass transit networks is not only a matter of providing transportation means but is also a social investment directly affecting people’s productivity,” he said.
“Transportation opens accessibility because many residents find it difficult to reach schools or workplaces, simply because high costs or unavailability.”
He also warned Batam to anticipate a spike in private vehicle use to prevent congestion in the future.
