he Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) has requested the Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) to relax quarantine restrictions amid soaring logistics costs driven by geopolitical tensions.
Barantin head Abdul Kadir Karding said that Apindo had conveyed several recommendations to reduce export and import barriers for fisheries, agriculture and animal products.
“We received many valuable inputs. The first one is a request for us to improve, simplify and make services more efficient, so the process can be made faster,” he said on Wednesday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
He added that both exporters and importers often faced different legal interpretations between Jakarta and regional quarantine offices.
To streamline the trade process, Barantin said it was currently simplifying 22 agency regulations and coordinating with multiple ministries, as well as other government agencies to implement a single submission and single inspection system.
Abdul believed that these measures could reduce burdens on exporters, as he noted that the United States-Israeli war on Iran had pushed up logistics costs by between 103 and 109 percent, which also led to higher production costs for businesses.
“If these [production costs] are compounded by the burden of too many checkpoints and inspections, it will place an even greater burden on our exporters,” he added.
